2016-17 Super Star Baseball Black Edition (5 Box Break)

I got in 5 boxes of 2016-17 Super Star Baseball Black Edition last Friday and opened them over the weekend. The 2016-17 Black Edition is similar to the previous Blue (2014-15) and Gold (2015-16) Editions. With the Black Edition you seem to be guaranteed an autograph in every box in addition to the #'d Super Star card that you get in every box. I heard from a distributor the other day that the reason for the increased number of autos and jersey cards that you get from the Black Edition is because of a lower number of boxes produced (2,500 instead of 5,000) and the company that makes Super Star Baseball cards will stop their production of cards with the Black Edition since their contract with the KBO and Player's Association were not renewed for this year. He did tell me that another company is planning to pick up where the left off with a possible release of their own cards in April or May of this year.

Most of the autographs seem to come from younger players that have had limited playing time over the last season or two. I know there are also some more sought after autos from the bigger stars, but I didn't get any this time around. Hopefully some of the younger players will have breakout seasons over the next few years and increase their desirability.

Anyway, here is a breakdown of what I got out of the 5 boxes with the scans of the hits from each box.

  1. That's pretty wild that you got two of the 50 Lee Seung-yuop Super Star cards.

    1. I know. Those 2 cards and the Jang Won-jun jersey cards were pretty much the highlights of the 5 boxes I got. The autos are pretty lackluster since they are all relatively unknown players minus the Jung Jin-ho. He is pretty much the only player out of those that have had a fair amount of appearances in the KBO (around 50 games each season), but he still hasn't had tons. He is primarily a reserve player that comes on to run or pinch hit from time to time. I do like the design of the autos though. I heard that they were clearing out all of the leftover autos and jerseys since this will be the last release that Super Star Baseball will have.

It may be a coincidence or just poor sorting, but it seems like a lot of people have been getting similar results with duplicates of the #'d cards. I have a feeling that boxes are just being pulled straight from the case and sent out and getting several boxes from the same case will result in some of those duplicates. I have noticed that for some of the really sought after cards in the black edition such as the Lee Seung-youp patch cards #'d to 5. I saw that one guy pulled 2 of them from the boxes he opened and they are selling for about $1,000 each. I think 4 of the 5 (maybe 3) have already been pulled because I have seen photos of them floating around.

I will probably pick up a few more boxes of them next week and that may be the end of them for me. I ended up with most of the team sets and the all starts completed in my box break. I just need a few more here or there and some of the super stars to complete everything except the autos and jersey cards, which I don't have that much of a desire or money to do.

Anxious to see who picks up making the cards since the company that makes the Super Star Baseball cards is supposed to be done. I heard that a new company will probably be releasing some sets shortly after the start of the new season.
